What and how to install?
Don't have Quake 3 Arena?
No Problem! You can play Urban Terror using ioUrbanTerror, a free replacement for Q3A. It's not compatible with PunkBuster Anti-Cheat though, so you can't play on servers with PB enabled (there are almost none of these though).
Requirements: * Urban Terror 4.1 Installer
Installing: Download and run the Urban Terror installer. There is no difference between the .zip or .exe packages and ioUrbanTerror is included in both. The .exe just makes it simpler for new users to install the Urban Terror files.
If you're using the .zip simply extract it (for example to: D:\Games\, so it becomes D:\Games\UrbanTerror\). Then right click the executable (ioUrbanTerror.exe or the linux/mac-equivalent) and create a shortcut to it and place it on your desktop. Linux users need to give the executable permission to be executed, by right-clicking it, going to properties and ticking the allow execution box.
For those using the .exe installer, simply run the installer. It will ask you where to install. Browse for it (for example: D:\Games\UrbanTerror\) on your hard-drive and then select Next to have the installer place the files & folders where they belong. That's it. You can now play on any server that does not have PunkBuster enabled. Set 'Punkbuster' to 'off' in the ingame server browser to automatically filter PB servers out.
Do have Quake 3 Arena?
Then you can continue using Q3A with the Urban Terror mod and PunkBuster.
Requirements: * Quake III Arena with unique cd-key * Point Release 1.32 (or 1.32b or 1.32c, doesn't really matter) * up-to-date PunkBuster * Urban Terror 4.1 Installer
Make sure you have Quake3 and the Point Release installed (select yes when it asks you to install PunkBuster), have PunkBuster updated (use PBsetup from www.evenbalance.com) and have your cd-key entered into Quake3.
Download the Urban Terror Installer from one of the download links. There is no difference between the .zip or .exe packages. The .exe just makes it simpler for new users to install the Urban Terror files.
If you're using the .zip simply extract the 'q3ut4' folder into your Quake III Arena folder (Eg: D:\Games\Quake III Arena\q3ut4\). You will have to create an Urban Terror shortcut manually (see bottom of this FAQ).
For those using the .exe installer simply run the installer. It will ask you where to install, then choose your Quake III Arena folder and ignore the warning. Browse for it on your hard-drive (Eg: D:\Games\Quake III Arena\) and then select Next to have the installer place the files & folders where they belong. Remember to select your Quake III Arena folder, not the 'baseq3' folder within. When in the Urban Terror main menu, open the console with ~ and type: /pb_cl_enable to enable PunkBuster.
If you own Quake 3 Arena, you can also use ioUrbanTerror if you want. You do not need to download a big Urban Terror installer again. If you installed Urban Terror 4.1 to your quake3 folder, you can use ioUrbanTerror from there as well. |
General: FPSPeople with dual core cpu's might need to turn off affinity on 1 core (through the windows taskmanager or automated using this). Nvidia users may need to change a setting in the nvidia control panel to disable threaded optimization and/or setting Multi-display/Mixed GPU acceleration to "Single display performance mode". Also, make sure you have the newest drivers from either nvidia.com or amd.com (ATI).
To get better fps on slow machines, try disabling anti aliasing and anisotropic filter in your video card control panel. Also in the Urban Terror system menu, try a lower resolution, and low texture quality. Turning on 'Compress textures' helped some people too.
BotsThey still work, after doing /bot_enable 1 and /addbot , but they are not supported! They might cause problems and crashes! More info here.
Avi recordingFirst record a demo (default key = f12), then play the demo and use /video and /stopvideo to record an avi. You can use cl_aviframerate to set the framerate and cl_aviMotionJpeg to choose uncompressed or mpjeg codec. It is recommended to use low resolutions when recording .avi's. Check out this thread as well.
ASEThe All Seeing Eye is now totally dead. The scanners are no longer working.
Instead of ASE, you can just use Qtracker. It supports Urban Terror 4.1.
FunstuffYou can set funstuff with /funred and /funblue. The options are comma-seperated and depend on your team, race and wearing a helmet or not. They do not work in FFA. Example: "/funred cigar, jason, viking"
These sites show most available options: here or here.
If you want to create your own custom funstuff, check this out.
Mouse Sensitivity in ioUrbanTerrorIf your sensitivity feels 'accelerated' in ioUrbanTerror, check this post.
Other mouse problemsIf you're having issues with your mouse, check to see what your /in_mouse is at. in_mouse is set to -1 by default, to change this via console, type: /in_mouse (to see what the current value is) then to change it: /in_mouse "1" or "-1" then for the setting to take effect: /in_restart
Also, if your mouse 4/5/6/7/8 buttons aren't working, try binding them to keyboard strokes. Lots of mouse drivers let you do this (Logitech for example), otherwise there's other programs available that let you do this.
Licence Stuff
Urban Terror is a mod for Quake 3 Arena. Urban Terror can be freely distributed over the internet, unmodified, without charging for the product. Urban Terror uses the Quake 3 SDK license. This means the game code (the .qvm's in zpak000.pk3) are closed source and can only be distributed electronically over the internet, not on cd or dvd. The non-code data files of Urban Terror (zpak000-assets.pk3) can go on any medium however. The full license texts come with the installer, they outweigh the information provided here.
Urban Terror does not use any Quake 3 data, only its engine (on windows: quake3.exe) to run on. It therefor can also run on other executables created from the GPL'ed Quake 3 code. ioUrbanTerror.exe is such an executable and is distributed together with Urban Terror, but is a seperate product. Quake 3 can still be used to run Urban Terror on if the end-user prefers it. ioUrbanTerror uses the GPL license and its source code is openly available. ioUrbanTerror does not depend on Urban Terror, it can be used to run any Quake 3 mod or even baseq3, by setting the appropriate fs_game. When running Urban Terror on ioUrbanTerror, Urban Terror's close sourced .qvm's (quake virtual machine) are interprated by the open source engine (ioUrbanTerror).
Running a ServerUsing ioUrbanTerrorUnzip the Urban Terror installer. Edit the server.cfg and mapcycle.txt in the q3ut4-folder to your likings and start the server with the following arguments: +exec server.cfg
On windows, you use ioUrTded.exe, on Linux ioUrTded.i386.
Using Quake3 (+punkbuster)Install Quake3 and Point Release 1.32. This installs PB too. Update PB with PBSetup. Then install/unzip Urban Terror so that you have the baseq3-folder, the quake3-executable and q3ut4-folder together in the same folder. Edit the server.cfg and mapcycle.txt in q3ut4 to your likings and start the server with the following arguments: +set fs_game q3ut4 +set dedicated 2 +exec server.cfg
On windows, you use quake3.exe, on Linux q3ded.
Auto-downloadsAuto-downloads only work on ioUrbanTerror clients of at least version 1.35urt (check your console to see the version), that have auto-download enabled (cl_autodownload 1). It works on any server.
This is how it works: The server sets a URL of the location of the maps, using: sets sv_dlURL "mysite.com" (try to keep the URL as short as possible). When a client doesn't have a map that's being played, it will try to download it from that URL. For example, the map that is being played is ut4_example.bsp, the sv_dlURL is mysite.com and the client doesn't have the map. It will then try to download it from: http://mysite.com/q3ut4/ut4_example.pk3. So when your sv_dlURL is mysite.com, make sure the actual pk3's are in http://mysite.com/q3ut4/.
Mappers should make sure they never release 2 versions of a map with the same name. If you have a beta, call it ut4_mapname_beta1, ut4_mapname_beta2 etc. The .bsp always has to be the same name as the .pk3. Don't put multiple .bsp's in one .pk3 and don't use a small pk3 to fix 1 texture of a previous pk3.
In 4.1, the default sv_dlURL is "urbanterror.net". There's a script running on urbanterror.net that will spread the downloads over multiple mirrors. Your client will need to be at least of version 1.35urt (supports redirects) and send a correct referer (ioQ3://x.x.x.x) for the script to accept the request. Some security software blocks the referer and you will get a 403 error. Turn off that 'security'.
Errors:"invalid gamefolder"First check if you are on 4.1. In the right bottom on the main menu you can see if it says 4.0 or 4.1. If you are indeed running 4.1 and still get this message, the server you are trying to connect to is running 4.0. Just try other servers untill you find one that is 4.1.
Client unknown to authThis happens when the server requires you to have a valid Q3A key. ioUrbanTerror cannot connect to the server and will give this error.
If you use Q3A and do have a valid key and get this error, delete all files called 'q3key' in your quake3-dir and subdirs. Start vanilla Quake3, enter key, quit. Try again.
Interface X expected (Q3A only)Install Q3A Point Release 1.32
Couldn't load xxxx.bspServer is runnin a map that you don't have. Go get it on a map site. Or if you use ioUrbanTerror, use cl_autodownload 1 and reconnect. If the server set it up properly, you will be able to auto-download it.
Video mode not supported / OpenGL Subsystem troubleYour monitor or operating system can not handle the resolution Urban Terror is trying to run at, or you don't have the correct driver for your video card installed. Get the correct driver here: Nvidia / Ati. If you have the correct driver and suspect the resolution being at fault, open your q3config.cfg with a text-editor and pay special attention to r_mode (resolution), r_fullscreen (toggle fullscreen) and r_displayrefresh (refresh rate). Setting r_mode to 4 = 800x600, 6=1024xx768, 8=1280x1024. Setting r_displayrefresh to 0 makes it use the default from your desktop.
Where to find q3config/demos/screenshots/videosYou can find your q3config.cfg at:
Linux: ~./q3a/q3ut4/ (/home/<yourname>/.q3a/q3ut4, make sure to enable showing of hidden files to find it)
OSX: /<yourname>/Library/Application Support/Quake3/q3ut4/ (<yourname> is the item with the little house-icon)
Windows: installationdir/q3ut4/ (example: C:\Program Files\UrbanTerror\q3ut4\)
If you have Windows Vista and have Urban Terror installed in the 'Program Files' directory and don't use 'run as admin' on Urban Terror, you can often find the config at C:\Users\.yourname.\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files\UrbanTerror\q3ut4\ (this is a hidden directory, so enable those in the folder options).
Could not load Curl lib (linux)
Either you don't have curl installed installed or the name of the lib is different than the game expects. You can install curl through your package manager. You can set the name of your lib by opening the Urban Terror console (shift + escape when in the main menu) and then typing: /cl_curllib .
Awaiting snapshot
If your loading screen hangs on this, it probably means you're trying to connect to a server that has its sv_timeout setting set to a lower value (in seconds) than it takes your PC to load the map. To make your pc load the map faster, close all other running programs and try to reconnect once you get stuck on awaiting snapshot. Open console with shift+escape and type: /reconnect . If that doesn't work, find a server with a higher sv_timeout setting (no way to tell, just try others), pr a server with a smaller map which shoud load faster. Proper Shortcut:PROPER SHORTCUT:To create a shortcut for Urban Terror, right-click on your desktop and select 'New', then 'Shortcut'. A dialog box will appear asking for the location of the program we're creating a shortcut for. Browse to your Urban Terror or Quake3 folder and select 'quake3.exe' or 'ioUrbanTerror.exe'. Press Next then enter in "Urban Terror 4.1" as the name, then press Finish. You should now have a shortcut on your desktop labeled "Urban Terror 4.1". If you used ioUrbanTerror.exe, that's it, you can now start Urban Terror. If you used quake3.exe, it still has the Quake 3 icon, and if you run it, it only opens Quake 3. Right-click on the shortcut and select Properties. Click on the "Change Icon" button and browse to your Urban Terror folder and select the "q3ut.ico" file (Eg: D:\Quake 3 Arena\q3ut4\q3ut.ico). Hit OK. Next in the "Target" field we need to add some information to the existing line to tell quake3 to launch Urban Terror. After the last quote put in a space then type in "+set fs_game q3ut4" (without the quotes) so that for example it looks like: "D:\Quake 3 Arena\quake3.exe" +set fs_game q3ut4. Press the OK button and you now have a working Urban Terror 4.1 shortcut. |
